2020 Awards Season Round-up

Awards season is upon us! World-class talent from across Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), ILMxLAB, and Skywalker Sound are being honored in 2020.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced their Oscar nominations.

ILM again took three out of five Best Visual Effects nominations for Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, and The Rise of Skywalker. 

Composer John Williams also continued his record-breaking total of Oscar nominations (52) for Best Original Score of The Rise of Skywalker.

Skywalker Sound will return to the Oscars with nominations for Best Sound Mixing (Ad Astra) and Best Sound Editing (The Rise of Skywalker).

Multiple ILM productions were recognized by the British Film Academy (BAFTA) with three (out of five) nominations in the Special Visual Effects Category, including Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. 

Skywalker Sound also received a BAFTA nomination for their efforts on The Rise of Skywalker, as did composer John Williams for his original score.

Both ILM and ILMxLAB picked up a combined 20 nominations from the Visual Effects Society (VES) in their annual awards presentation.

Along with Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, and The Rise of Skywalker, ILM received VES nominations for their work on The Mandalorian and Aladdin. In addition, theme park attractions Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and Jurassic World: The Ride are nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project.

ILMxLAB was also recognized by the VES for two of their immersive entertainment productions Vader Immortal: Episode I and Avengers: Damage Control.

The Cinema Audio Society (CAS) joined the recent announcements, awarding nominations to five Skywalker Sound productions including Frozen 2, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.

Skywalker Sound also received over 20 award nominations for the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards. Work in sound effects, foley, and dialogue/ADR were honored for diverse projects including documentary (The Apollo), short form animation (Star Wars: Resistance), and more.
